About the ride
The Silver Comet follows an old rail line from Smyrna all the way to the Alabama state line, where it connects to Alabama's Chief Ladiga Trail. That makes it one of the longest paved trails in the country.
The Mavell Road trailhead is the eastern starting point. The grades are gentle, the surface is smooth, and mile markers make it easy to plan an out-and-back of any length.
It is a longer drive from Lake Oconee, so it works best as a full-day trip or a stop on the way to or from Atlanta.
