About the ride
Rock Hawk sits on the shore of Lake Oconee near Wallace Dam, built around the Rock Hawk Effigy, a bird-shaped stone mound that archaeologists believe is 1,000 to 3,000 years old. Around it is a network of about 15 miles of color-coded trails shared by mountain bikers, hikers, and runners.
The orange trail is a good first ride for beginners. Riders who want more can find rock gardens on sections like the Talon and Upper T, and there is even an old Model T sitting along one of the trails. Much of the system is on the easier side, which makes it a good place to try mountain biking for the first time.
Leaves can hide the trail in the fall, so pay attention to the markers. Lawrence Shoals Park, right next door, has a campground and a day-use area on the lake.
