About the ride
The Augusta Canal Trail runs on the old towpath between the canal and the Savannah River. It starts at the 1875 headgates and locks in Savannah Rapids Park and ends near downtown Augusta. It is nearly flat and mostly hard-packed dirt, so a hybrid or cruiser works fine.
Along the way you pass river views, old mills, and a 2.5-mile mountain bike singletrack that branches off near the pump station. The Lake Olmstead trailhead has restrooms and water about halfway.
Riders looking for more miles can cross into South Carolina and add the North Augusta Greeneway. Bike rentals are available at the Savannah Rapids trailhead.

Good to know
- Free parking at Savannah Rapids Park.
- Sections of the towpath sometimes close for repairs. Check with the Augusta Canal before you go.
- Bike rentals at the north trailhead (seasonal hours).
- Mostly shaded.
